EGL clothes demand in US

topic posted Thu, August 24, 2006 - 10:56 AM by  offlineMaryline
I have been reading posts and looking online and i realise how little suppliers of EGL clothing there are and how expensive everything is. Are there any US stores? even if it's just online?

If not do you think there is enough of a demand for one? Especially in the bay area?

I am looking to start a third (fourth?) business and maybe this could be it!
I could import as well as have local EGL artist sell there creations...

ideas? comments?

As far as I know, there are absolutely NO stores based on EGL clothing only. Most of the time things are done by commission. What I think would be superb would be if you started a store that would take clothing commissions personally but sell things like parasols, headdresses, shoes, socks, etc. at the actual store. That is, you would take the measurements for the commissions yourself and send the requests to those who accept commissions. You would take a portion of the profit for advertising the seamstress/seamster as you have acted as a liason. In order to justify quality and the like, you could have ONE example at the store and a catalog with the seamstress's/seamster's work. As for those who would care for new ideas or are completely new to the world of EGL, a catalog with designs would also be a smart idea.

    ...

Want to start this up together?? Hahaha. =)

i was thinking that too, sort of like the way Dark Garden corsets is set up.
let me know if you do start it, I'd like to produce some of my smaller items, like the bonnet I have in my photo album. I can make those fairly quickly.

We could start a chain! I live on the East Coast but who knows. I'll probably end up somewhere else. I think this is an awesome idea whith a lot of potential. If Miss Maryline isn't interested, then I sure am.

    these are all great ideas...
I like the Dark Garden model, of having some items in store but then lots of custom made. Stormy leather works a bit like that, where you can try on different models and sizes but then can get leather goods made in a variety of colors and kinds of materials...

    lots to ponder
keep on posting, we might be on to something!!!

yes and keep me updated. I like to produce clothes but don't like dealing with the business end of things, so I'd rather wholesale and let someone else handle the retail.

YESS! i have a number of designs in mind and various ideas which i would love to pass on to you guys, or take some part.

      Another idea:
Feature work of local artists on the walls! Super 7, the tokusatsu/alt comix store near Jtown, does this, and i think it's a great way to give cultural flavor the the shoppe and support local creatives. Also, don't be afraid to diversify a bit! Carry items lolis would like that are hard to find at other shops. Don't forget the kink/fetish community, either - everyone loves a well-made, traditional maid costume! My collar was made by Liquid Nymph, who produces great Victorian/loli collars and cuffs:
      stores.ebay.com/Liquid-Nym...nufacturing
We should talk to her about selling some stuff in the store, and maybe taking custom orders through the store as well.

Decor-wise, a high-quality decorative paint job can go a long way (count me in for this one!). We could select theme colors for the shoppe - black, white and pink would be my choices - and color everything those colors: the walls, the business cards, the logo... :3

On a final note, it might be wise to design more Victorian, EGA-type stuff like A+ Lidel and Atelier BOZ, classic EGL like Innocent World and VISIBLE, *and* sweet loli like Metamorphose Temps de Fille and Baby the Stars Shine Bright. This is a niche to begin with, so for the happiness of the customers and the financial safety of the shop, it would be wise to cast a wide net. Maybe having three lines under a single label - an elegant gothic Victorian, a gothic lolita, and a sweet lolita line - would be wise. Designs could also be easily modified to fit the different lines. Just changing the buttons and fabric can convert a design between sweet loli and EGL, and making an outfit longer and not so poofy, with a higher collar and more severe angles, can change something from EGL to EGA.

Geez, i'm full of ideas today. :P

One more idea, to make it a full-immersion experience:
Collect the j-rock MP3s of participating friends, artists and donors on an iPod or laptop, to provide a soundtrack for the shop. Goth music couldn't hurt, either (some deathrock would be great!).

The more we can make this a full-immersion experience - a destination store that people are willing to put in a little extra effort to visit - the better.

yeah i like the idea of making it Lolies in general and not specifically EGL

there is what, about 4 or 5 different types
and the punk or jrock type can be totally school gril fetish
and the cute lolis fot the ageplay folks...

definitly room to cross market the same products to draw in a crowd...

Well, one thing that I would like to see is for there to not be any of these silly 'Catholic schoolgirl' outfits as EGL clothing. That would SUCK. Things need to be specifically marked, y'know?? I think that would be cool.

Dude, I'm EXTREMELY serious about getting this started. I would LOVE to do this and I'm pretty good in the retail department I think. I would not have any issues starting the East Coast chain. What do you think?????

i agree! It's moronic - Hot Topic puts lace on a skimpy babydoll dress and calls it loli. Problem is, that cuts out most of the defining features that make loli what it is! i have *never* seen a loli top with a "look at my boobehs" neckline, even when i was *in* Harajuku.

And if we must do punk-loli, let's ground it a little more in actual punk fasion, and a little less in Sid & Nancy and some drooling otaku's daydreams. i can see it now - loli-kutten (punker vests with patches and studs)! :D To the drawing board i go....

This seems like the sort of thing that could do well with one centrally-located West Coast location and one centrally-located East Coast location, just like Kid Robot. San Francisco and New York would probably be ideal.

hot topic can get away with it because their only real competition is online, and despite online sales rising, people want to try on clothes....

and their price line is low. most american teens are not going to spend $500+ on a dress

disposeable clothes for disposeable teenage fads. I know, I work there.

Right. Many folks, further, simply *can't* spend that much on a single article; they can't afford it. That's important to keep in mind when putting together a store.

One solution would be to sell mix-and-match tops, skirts, pettis and accessories that can be had at a more reasonable price. Am i correct in thinking that such items are easier (and therefore less labor-expensive) to manufacture than sewing a properly-fitting dress?

timewise and materialwise, i'd say yes, generally.

also, designing items that have a more forgiving fit would be best for beginning production...adjustments like buckles and lacing means you can make 4-6 different sizes of an item as opposed to 10 perfect sizes to start out...less patterns.

Right. Besides which, a bit of lacing in back can make for such a wonderfully curvy look! :)

i had a design for a loli kutte that i drew a couple days ago. i'll go ahead and finish it up and scan it. :)

                NEW YORK please!

if you dont end up getting started on the east coast first, you should look into selling through trash and vaudeville on St. Marks. they have a bunch of cool items for the alt kids but not much for the EGL/loli kids. i do think a store in NYC would work, it is the fashion mecca of the US, but it really is a hard place to get started unless you have connections.

good luck. i really hope this works out for you. oh and if you ever need handmade knit items... *raises hand*
